Why Door & Window Placement Dictates Plan Quality
Incorrectly positioned doors and windows are among the most expensive mistakes in construction. A door that hits an adjacent wardrobe, blocks a light switch, or collides with another door ruins the livability of a home.
In this guide, we review the fundamental architectural conventions for placing doors and windows in PlanCraft 2D Floor Planner.

1. Standard Door Sizing Guide
| Door Application | Standard Width | Standard Height | Minimum Clearance |
|---|---|---|---|
| Main Exterior Entrance | 36 inches (3'0" / 91 cm) | 80 inches (6'8" / 203 cm) | Required for ADA accessibility |
| Interior Habitable Rooms | 30 to 32 inches (76 to 81 cm) | 80 inches (203 cm) | Standard bedroom/living access |
| Bathrooms & Powder Rooms | 28 to 30 inches (71 to 76 cm) | 80 inches (203 cm) | Compact access |
| Closets & Utility Rooms | 24 to 28 inches (61 to 71 cm) | 80 inches (203 cm) | Bi-fold or sliding preferred |

2. The 3 Rules of Interior Door Swings
- Swing Inward Against the Adjacent Wall: Doors should almost always swing inward into the room they access, folding against the closest perpendicular wall. This keeps hallways clear and provides immediate visual sightlines upon entry.
- Keep the Light Switch Accessible: The wall switch for the room's primary lighting must be located on the latch side of the door, never behind the open door leaf.
- Bathroom Privacy Angle: Position bathroom doors so that when partially ajar, the vanity sink is visible rather than the toilet.

3. Window Placement & Natural Daylight Standards
Residential building codes typically mandate the 8% and 4% rule: * Natural Light (Glazing): The total glazed area in any habitable room must be at least 8% of the floor area. For a 150 sq ft bedroom, you need at least 12 sq ft of glass window area. * Natural Ventilation: The openable window area must equal at least 4% of the room's total floor area.
Cross-Ventilation Best Practice Whenever possible, position windows on opposite or perpendicular walls to induce pressure differentials. This draws cooling breezes across the room, drastically lowering mechanical air conditioning costs.
